Avoid overfilling fresh water

What is the "Code" you refer to in regards to a trailer. Please cite.

I believe that code requires twice as much vent as fill pipe on a pressure fill system. This usually means that they run two pipes for vent and one for the fill. Then the buyer sees water spilling out those vents and installs valves causing a potential serious problem.

On gravity fill system, venting is only a problem when the fill is jammed nearly full of hose leaving only the tiny vent screen to expel air.

On my RV if I slightly overfill water pools on the ground on the side with the Gravity Fill door.. If I SERIOUSLY overfill it starts to pool in side and the Gas Alarm goes off as it gets soaked by the water fall.

Don't worry. it wont hurt anything other than your ears.

How I fill mine (once or twice a month)

I open the door and lock it optn there are a couple of 1 1/2" square lumber "Rods" on top of the tank. Tank is translucent so I can see water level. I sit at Picnic table while it fills. If I want it FULL (do not normally worry about 100% When the wood moves.. They are full (The wood sits atop the tank)

Else when ti's close I shut off the water. unhook, pack up and hit the road Jack and dont' yhou come back for at least a week. (Park rules since I fill on departure)

It always amazes me, when I fill my 30 gallon fresh tank all the way. It drips a little out the fill cap and vent tube as I maneuver out of my driveway for our trip, as expected, and yet three hours of driving later, if I stop for gas, I still managed to leave a few drips. I would think after a 3 Hour Drive, all the water in the filler neck would have all been splashed out.

What ever you do don't walk away while you're filling the water tank. My brother in-law got sidetracked and forgot to turn the hose off. As a result the fresh water tank blew up and the floor raised inside his motorhome. That was an expensive mistake.

It sounds like the OP is planning to use the pressure fill, not gravity fill.

Doesn't matter, fill it till it runs out somewhere, the vent(s) need the bugs and road dirt flushed out anyway.
