You might try buying 18" long aluminum flat stock, and then bolt on a 1/4-20 bolt about 3/4" long to one end. It will work to unlatch the top latch, and gently pull down the awning strap.
why buy the stuff to make one when you can walk right in to Camping World and buy one off the shelf for only $5.69 pull rod
just my opinion but just buy one
