I was told by some very nice folks in a Dancyville, TN plantation house that "hush puppies" were dog food, chunks of deep fired dough tossed to the noisy dogs with a yelled "HUSH, puppy!"
I don't think Mister Perry or Miss Janey would have lied to this Northern sailor boy. My, but their Sunday after-church dinners were WONDERFUL!!
Ennyhoo, yes, breaded catfish filets and hush puppies is GREAT!! Sadly, there is no place around here to get really GOOD stuff.
No, grilling is NOT real barbecue. Grilling is done in minutes, real barbecue takes hours!
Oh, yeah, the answer to the OP question: As with so many things, IT DEPENDS!
