Terryallan nailed it nearly completely. In NC they serve hushpuppies with it. so wrong! Hushpuppies are served with sea food.
Some of those from 'up north' think grilling is barbecuing. it ain't. ;)
We eat Hushpuppies with everything. BBQ, Seafood, Just whatever. At Southern Fish Camps. (Restaurants found in the South, and specializing in fish of all kinds) They are appetizers.
Do you know where Hushpuppies came from?
The Old South. In those days. Larger houses (Plantations) had the kitchen in a building separate from the main house. So that if the kitchen burned, The house would not. Servants would have to carry the food from the kitchen to the house. So naturally the dogs would come, and try to get the food. As most Southern meals consist of something breaded, and fried. They would makes balls of breading, Fry it, and throw them to the dogs, Saying Hush! Puppy, Hush! Puppy. And Hushpuppies were born.
Of course Outdoor, Southern Fish Fries take credit for it as well, as they would make Hushpuppies while frying the fish to throw to the dogs, Hollerin. Hush Puppy.
