Basic tool kit

Just graduated to a travel trailer after a few years off. Started out with a tent then had a couple of pop-ups so never too complicated an abode.

I'm wondering what everyone has in their basic tool kit. So far, I've put in
* Vice Grips
* Adjustable wrench
* Multi-tip screwdriver
* Utility knife
* 1/2 drive socket set, breaker bar, and torque wrench (mostly for tire issues)
* VOM (Multi-meter)
* Hatchet (mostly for firewood, but can use for hammer)

I'm not looking for anything too complicated or extensive. Just basic enough for ordinary repairs or to limp along to the nearest hardware store or repair facility.

(I do on-site repair work and I have the whole back of a mini-van with tools and equipment, so I have it all, but don't want to carry it all.)

  • a good credit card, kidding sockets, bottle jack, fuses and lights, flash light, bandaids
  • I learned long ago that no matter what you take with you, anytime you are more than 20 feet from your main toolbox (ESPECIALLY if that 20 feet is straight up on a maintenance stand!) as soon as the job starts, you will discover that you don't have the one tool or part that you really, REALLY have to have!
    Now that I am a RETIRED mechanic, I carry very few tools and almost no spare parts.
  • Depends on just what you're planning on breaking :) Planning tools is a lot like deciding on spare parts to carry...not very likely you'll EVER have just what you need to be prepared to improvise.
  • I bought a basic tool kit (sockets, pliers, crimpers, screw drivers, etc..) that also included some electrical and a tote. Every time I need a tool for the camper that I don't have, I buy it and put it in the tote when done.

    Also a basic tool kit for truck.

    Things added:
    2 Air compressors (120vac 2 gal, 100#) and a 12vdc (150#)for the pickup.
    Pop rivet gun (fix lawn chairs)
    Tool to cut PVC pipe (made cloths line to hang on ladder for swim suits)
    Electric drill and assorted bits
    Bottle jack
    Battery charger
    Extension cords
    Box of assorted fuses and light bulbs. If I need one I buy extras and stick them in the box for later.
    Bow tree saw and hatchet

    My tote is getting full but you get the basic idea. I can buy tools for "what if" but then I'd have way more tools than I might ever need. At least this way I can justify the expense.
  • Welcome to RV.net!
    1/2 drive is normally too big for many items. I find that a 1/4 and 3/8 is adequate.
    I find that I need torx and square screw drivers.
    Hammers, claw and 2.5 pound short handled sledge
    Compact hack saw
    Tool kits will vary by what type of rig you have. Suggest you add it to your profile.
  • Everyone has their favorites, for me crimp connectors, crimping tool, heat shrink tubing etc., are essential for the electrical systems. A couple of strap wrenches can come in handy as well. A good assortment of wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers are standard equipment. Make sure you have all of the gear necessary to fix a flat - tire repair kit, jack, jack stand, torque wrench etc. Lots more you can add but weight and available storage space will be an issue eventually. :C
  • I carry several pex fitting and pex tool. I also carry a torch and propane. I have an air compressor and patch kits for towables and bike tires. plus lots of rope and duct tape and flashlights!After your first summer of camping you will continue to add on to the list if you have kids, Im always fixing stuff for our kids!
