Battery charge

Hi everyone, just purchased my first RV (5er). I plan on dry camping 90% and was surprise to notice how fast my batt charge drops after i disconnect shore line, all with no power turned on(about 20hrs to 20% drain). Is this normal/what besides monoxide detector is always drawing power?
  • thanks for the reply's. I have one new 12v marine batt that i had check at auto store and they said it was good. The dealer told me this was normal but from full charge to one bar showing after 20 hrs off shore line doesn't seem right.
  • With no use you should get 2 to 4 days (maybe more) to run base systems.

Think about two or four GC2 (golf car) batteries.
    Relamp with LED lighting.
    200 to 500w of solar.
  • yep, that would be my guess also. You didn't say what year your 5'er is or if the batteries are newer, or how many, or what kind.....kinda difficult to help you out without more info.

There are other things that may be a slight drain besides your CO2 detector. Do you have a radio...if yes, those typically never turn off as they have memory that requires some small amount of power. How about overhead fans, or a storage compartment light...etc.

But it sounds like your battery(s) are just old or maybe a bad cell or something. Since you do a lot of boondocking, it just may be to your advantage to go ahead and get some new ones.

  • if you don't keep the trailer plugged in and don't have a battery disconnect switch and only one battery, the parasitic power drains can empty a battery in just a few days.
that's why many of us install a disconnect switch if we don't keep the trailer plugged in.

i have two 12v deep cycle batteries since i dry camp almost all the time. i can use the disconnect switch in December, for storage, and go back out in April, and the batteries have barely lost any charge.
