Before a trip should I turn off the water of my house?

I turn off the main valve of the water supply of my house but some tell me to add antifreeze in sinks and toilets to prevent roaches from coming up the pipes if the pipes dry up. Is this a good idea?

    I have a friend who is a plumber and he always shuts off his main water valve to his house without having any problems. We never shut it off because we need the pool sweep to function and need water for our pool caretaker.
