For folks using DIY planks of 2by once you get wider than about 6" there is more chance of the wood splitting. The BEST solution, if you have a table saw is to take some 2x4 and rip one edge off so that it has square corners top and bottom. Rip two edges off for center boards. Now glue the square faces together using a water resistant glue like Titebond III or construction adhesive. Drill a couple of 1/4" holes as deep as possible into the edge of both 2x4s but do NOT space them opposite of each other. Now enlargen the hole to 3/8" but only about 1/2" deep. Screw a 4" construction screw into the hole until the head is below the surface. You don't need a lot of screws, because the glue is holding it together.
You can easily make wide planks this way that will almost never slit.
You can do the same with 2x8 or 2x10 lumber but you will need a long 1/4 drill, at least 1/2 of the width of the board. Drill into the edge with the 3/8" bit about 2". Now insert the 4" screw.
