Find a 90s model GM 2500 or 3500 with a 350 and a 5 speed. Preferably 93 I think or later have a nv4500 trans. Bullet proof trans and engine combo.
Should find one in decent shape for $5k or less.
Plan on some $ for overloads or airbags if you don't find a 3500 w factory overload springs.
Then you got $5k +\- to spend on the nicest camper you can find.
If not getting a slider model you can find late 90s campers in good shape for 5k.
Stay out of the rust belt when looking.
Target the 2 big snowbird areas. Florida or AZ, or the PAC NW has a lot and not rust buckets.
I'd stick with a pickup and camper that way you have something to drive and can leave the camper behind if you want or necessary.
