I don't use deodorizers very often, although I do have some in the camper all the time. When actually camping, I don't use them. I dump about every 3 days, no need for a deodorizer. I also flush soapy dish water down the black tank a couple times between dumps also.
When breaking camp, it depends upon how well I am able to rinse the black tank. My current camper has an outside connect flusher. So if I can flush with that, I can get the tank pretty clean (I watch the outlet through a clear add on extension slide valve -- Flush King." So when I can flush with a garden hose connected, there's no need for any deodorizer.
When I know I cannot flush, and it will be a while before taking the camper on the next trip, I'll drop one of those deodorizer pellet bags in the tank and add about 2 minutes of water through the toilet. I don't know how much that actually is, but running 2 minutes via the on-board water pump works pretty well.
Either way, we've never had odors.
