Buying our first RV

There so much to learn, know and do. We are buying a 1990 Holiday Rambler. I just googled the vin and it said there is a "total loss" record. What does that mean and should I be concerned? The RV is in great shape, runs good, has 70k miles and the interior is all brand new.

With that being said any advice would be very welcomed. Thank you, Heather

yep, if you were going to keep it till it self destructs that is one thing, since you plan on getting rid of it in a year or two, forget about it. unless you plan on giving it away . but why was it totaled?

and for your first RV? don't start this way.

  • What that means depends on where you are going with it. Some state will re-title salvage vehicles, others will not. Depending on whether the Holiday Rambler is a motorhome or trailer, some states don't title any trailers, so title status in anither state is not relevant.

Get pertinent legal advice for the state where you want to title and license this thing, and find out whether an insurance company will cover it.

Salvage titles are considered a clean title. BUT it varies state by state regarding salvage titled, totaled etc vehicles, what will happen when you go to register it, insure it etc. Some states won't register it and many insurance companies won't insure it.

These usually become a constant tangled web you will be constantly fighting one way or another.

And the biggest problem? When YOU go to sell it you will have the same problems also trying to find a buyer that wants to get involved in a totaled vehicle. And as you have found it is easily researched and forever follows the vehicle forever. Just saying. There are a ton of used RV's out there for sale find one with less baggage! :W
  • Wow, thank you and geez that is a little confusing!! I am going to have to ask the current owner in Illinois. We are due to pick it up on October 25 and drive it back home to PA.

Our intention is to keep it for a year or two then trade it in. Right now it works for us and our 3 dogs.
