camping with a smart car

Hello, Robb here. My partner and I are looking to get out and start camping together, he has a smart car and we are looking for options on a trailer we can pull. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

  • Maybe you should get a car top carrier to put your gear into. I also have a utility trailer that I tow behind my lawn mower, that might work for the smart car.
  • Here's an interesting link: Towing with a Smart.

Realistically, that little 1 liter engine isn't designed for the stresses of towing, even a small trailer. That's evidenced by its lack of a tow capacity rating. You might consider renting a car. We've done that for vacations when we don't take the trailer and don't want to put miles on our HHR.
  • what is the car rated to tow? a teardrop mypod would be maximum IMHO, if that. a 4x8 harbor freight special with a tent/et.al on it would probably max it out.

Before selecting a trailer, you need to find out what the towing capacity is for the Smart Car.
  • You might want to buy a small trailer like the one sold at Harbour Freight to carry the tent and supplies otherwise it is going to be a tight skeese in there.

You want to tow a trailer with your Smart Car? Do you mean a small storage trailer to hold your tent gear? Might find way more options if you were willing to go with a motor home and pull your SC behind it.
