Can I use travel trailer while still coupled to tow vehicle?

We're looking to hit the open road with our travel trailer. Is it okay to spend the night in our travel trailer while still hooked up to the truck?

I'm thinking in terms of random stops for 6-8 hours to eat and get some sleep.

Obviously, I don't want to cause any damage to the trailer or the truck. I have a weight distribution hitch and sway bar, FYI.

Thanks in advance for your input.

We do it all the time as well... I usually drop some jacks to keep the wiggle down somewhat.

  • We do not unhook.

We unhook the trailer pigtail from the truck and release the pressure on the WD bars, just to be safe.

You can run down the tow vehicle battery if you leave the cord plugged in.

This is not a problem on my FORD TRUCK as the battery connection is under a relay control and is switched OFF when I have my truck ignition key turned off.

I'm sure other trucks have the same standard feature - At least something to check in your case... You can always just pull the 7-way connector when you stop if in doubt. Of course I would leave a note on the steering wheel to remind you to hook it back up before you leave the next morning haha...

  • Yes no problem

However, be aware of battery use unless you have an isolator between the TT and the tow vehicle battery.
