No, you don't need 4x4 for the trip you're planning.
Our Jeep Liberty gave us so much enjoyment off-road during the past 11 years. It has 175,000 miles on it; 70,000 towing and we've only had routine maintenance done. We're still driving it.
Join a local 4x4 club and you'll be amazed at how much fun 4-wheeling can be. You'll see some awesome sites. It doesn't have to be hard-core driving. Even mild bumpy roads will take you to beauty.
