One concern about the Wrangler we had (and why we got rid of it) is if someone is in the back seat and there's a rear-end collision there's NO protection. I'd take a look at the 4-door Jeep. Not as pricey as some of the others, a little more basic, but might make for a little more room for the dog and any "stuff" you might want to drag to the beach or something.
