You do not need a 4 wheel drive but your choice of new cars with automatic transmissions that can be flat towed in very limited.
We tow both a Honda Fit and an unlimited Wrangler. You would be really happy if you could find a pre-2015 Honda Fit that can be flat towed. There is a LOT of room in the back, it is a great car and it gets great gas mileage.
The Jeep Wrangler is also a great car but I would get the 4 door version. There is really not a lot of room in the 2 door version.
