I live in New England all year 'round and get to drive in all sorts of conditions. I've never owned a four wheel drive vehicle. It's a very rare day that i can't make it somewhere if I need to, though there are more days when it's more sensible to avoid needing to go anywhere.
A 4x4 Jeep may well be an ideal toad for you for various other reasons, but don't base the choice on worrying about a freak storm that is impassible to two wheel drive vehicles (but not impassible to four wheel drive vehicles), especially since you'll also be traveling with a house you can stay in if things get too bad.
