The one in my TT started beeping, and new batteries didn't help. So off to Consumer Reports I went, and learned all I could about CO alarms. Turns out that they need replacing every so often. Since new ones are smaller than the one that came with the TT, is there any danger in making new holes in the ceiling of the TT? Or would it be better to try to secure it to the ceiling with velcro tape?

Um, fire alarm/smoke detectors go on the ceiling. CO/propane alarms generally go down low on the wall.As for securing such devices on the ceiling with velcro, I'd be concerned lest they fall on your punkin head in the middle of the night sometime, having vibrated just enough getting between there and here.

CO is lighter than air. I see no reason why a CO detector should go low on the wall.Propane is heavier than air. Propane detectors should go low on the wall.

What is needed is a dual chamber detector that will detect CO and smoke from a slow smoldering fire such as may start in a R/V because of electrical fires and fast burning smokeless fires. After a lot of research and talking to Kidde, they assured me that this one would work in a home and also A RV,there is no difference. This is what I found. A Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-B Nighthawk That seemed to be best suited for this kind of application.Like This They now can be bought at Home Depot, also At Amazon.Amazon I suggest you read all the info and make your decision on this but I replaced the ones in my Class C with this one.They are rated for 7 years and most are only rated for 5,If your RV is older than 5 years old and they haven't been changed they are most likely no good. Mine needed to be replaced so this was a good deal for me. Just a reminder,a first line of defense is always the best. Check those smoke detectors and replace them if needed,all have a date on them and how long they are good for. If they don't, toss them. I hope that this helps,

Before you run off to replace it.....they also will beep when there is low voltage. Check that your house battery is charged or the new detector will beep also.

Correct, and the C/O detectors can be mounted up high. Kidde makes a nice combo Fire/C/O detector that you can mount on the ceiling. Had one in my old trailer.

Smoke alarms in your home should be repalced every 10 years too.

Specific gravity of CO is .9667 with air being 1.0 so it is almost the same as air and will be detected at any location the detector is mounted. Propane is 1.5219 and will sink to the floor so therefore a combination CO/propane detector is located low.

....heated air can form a layer near your ceiling which can prevent the Carbon Monoxide from reaching a ceiling detector.

For this reason we suggest that it is best to mount your detectors on the walls at least a couple of feet below the height of the ceiling.

I got tired of the chirping and needing to change batteries all the time, so I got the Kidde with a ten year lithium ion battery and readout so if alarm does sound I know how severe the problem is.

I'm going to get the one from Amazon. (free shipping with prime-I love getting stuff in the mail) I changed the other smoke alarm earlier today, and there didn't seem to be any problem with making new holes in the ceiling. Both were about 5 years old.
