I live in OLY, also attended SPSCC back in the 80's. My first question is where are you planning on parking this van. Capitol Forest is closed during winter months. I can't think of too many places your going to be able to park where you are not going to get hassled.
As to the Van Idea ok for stealth but you'll find that for the 5k budget you can easily find a good Class C. Heck I think I saw one for 100.00 on Craigslist yesterday. with another grand you would have a pretty decent home.
There are two fairly cheap parks in town, both out by Black lake, One is Salmon Shores and can't remember the other. I believe about 350.00/month.
Anyway good luck and safe travels.
