I've read a number of the threads on waxing and it all tends to just confuse me. I'm looking at waxing ours for the first time this fall (bought it brand new last fall), and it will be my first time through the process.
The manual says 'wax with any standard wax,' but I read on here all of the comments about avoiding the decals because of potential damage. Is that really what people do? When I look at the number of decals and graphics on our rig, I note the significant amount of space (between letters, around graphics, etc...) that would not receive any wax.
How do you go about it? Do you wax everything, or do you somehow avoid the decals? I want to take the best care possible of our rig, but I've never waxed an rv in my life (haven't waxed a car in 20 years), so I'm looking for a little clarity on what people do.
Thanks!
Interesting subject and I will share my thoughts and I'm not an expert in wax, but a very long time (50+ yrs) user. There are basically two types of products to protect your RV and they are very different ... one is a sealant usually polymer based and the other is wax with the best being Carnauba wax. There are some mixtures, but personally I wouldn't use those since IMO you are attempting to combine two very different technologies and I feel the result is not optimual. The first tends to last fairly long (3mo up to 9+) and the wax a much shorter time. The real advantage to the Carnauba wax is you can get the best mirror type shine. Next let's talk about the decals and here I think 303 while good is just too short lived to use for actual protection unless you are willing to reapply it every 30 to 45 days. There have been a debate on both views on if you should wax/seal over the decals and my position is as long as you use a top quality sealant or wax you should be O.K. I think putting Caranuba wax on an RV is really a waste of time and effort and you should stick with a top quality polymer based sealant like Meguiars, Mothers, etc. and I use the Meguiars NXT or now the latest follow on their ULTIMATE Wax which they call a synthetic Wax, but in reality is a polymer type sealant. I put it over even the decals and now after 6 years have had no decal issues. Now one place you might consider slapping on a coat of actual Was is the front on the trailer over the sealant since that gets the most abuse from wind/dirt/bugs and the wax gives you basically a sacrifical layer that can be easily removed.
In closing these are just my opinions so take in the appropriate dosage and season to your liking:B
