Crack in sidewall of rear outside dually

I'm not there the look at it in person, but if you leave a tire with any slice, cut or crack in the sidewall, your taking one heck of a chance with yours, and everybody's safety. As a 23+ year Auto Tech, I would never tell a customer that any sidewall damage (slice, cut or crack)is acceptable.....the sidewall is the weakest part of a tire, I would of replaced it without a second thought.....JMO

If it really is a crack or damage on a Goodyear tire, I wou9ld take it to a Goodyear dealer.

Twice over the years I have had damage to a Goodyear tire and both times a Goodyear dealer called it road damage and replace the tire for no charge.

One other time, some years ago, a complete set of new tires on one of my trucks, seemed to wear much faster than normal. I had the purchase record for the tires and the Goodyear dealer agreed with me. I received a complete set of new tires for the truck, again at no charge.

Not a crack, that's a slice.
If the tires are over 1/2 tread you can throw a new one on there and be fine.
If they are wore down then just get a cheap used tire.

If that's the case, and the paint transfer can tie it to a specific vehicle, you have an insurance claim against the vehicle owner.

Do you have a spare tire? It is probably a different tire outside diameter than the current tires. Just a slight difference.

What I did when I had a right inside blowout is put on the spare, continue to my sister's house, and then rotate the spare and outside good tire to the front, then put the front on the back (they are basically the same age and would be same tire diameter.) I replaced the bad tire and one of the front one's (kept it for a friend) and found some 14 ply replacements! (they do not make them anymore).

So if your rear tire has a lot of miles on it, then I would consider putting on the front pair in the back (if the rim size and tires are the same).

If you have older tires on the front, and the rear is the same size, it will not matter to have the old and new tires on the front, with slightly different tire outside diameters (say within 3/4" outside diameter will not matter on the front).

On the back, say one tire where 30" tall and the other 29-3/4" tall. The outside diameter is 3.145X the height, or about 3/4" longer on the 1/4" taller tire. So while the inside tire might turn 600 times per mile, the outside would only turn 595. This is a problem! They are attached to the same axle, and will turn the exact same RPM, but one will be dragging the other along due to being taller.

You could have them mount the new tire, and then using a cloth tape measure, (for sewing) you can measure the outside diameter easy, and make a decision to replace both tires, and perhaps keep the best and youngest as a spare? Or if you have a 'new' spare, it will be the same diameter as any new replacement tire.

Yep it is cut. I'd get it off before any trip. A damaged side wall can go at any time, and it will be LOUD. Curbing is one of the main causes of tire failure.

If the other tire is relative new and shows no wear I would only replace the one and save the old one for a spare. May have to buy a wheel but they are not too expensive.
