Do you ever ship belongings to destination or back home?

This may be an odd question. My family of 5 are flying to Denver and renting an RV to do a 10 day trip through CO, WY, ID and MT. Because we are flying, we are limited in what we can bring. The thought was to stop at the first Walmart and load up on supplies, But we need to get sleeping bags, chairs, etc. My question is, does anyone ship this stuff to the destination first or, do they buy the stuff and then ship it back home when the trip is over. We have RV'd before, I just wanted to get the most time out of our trip by not driving to CO from NJ. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Our trip is in mid June. Planning on hitting Yellowstone of course, but more looking to go slow and see small towns, rodeo, Pow Wow, stuff like that.

  • We did a similar trip with our family of 7 in April, 2017. My wife and I flew to Las Vegas a day early. One of our checked bags was a big cooler with we packed full of stuff. Put a chain through the handles with a TSA lock on it. Picked up the rental and spend the day outfitting. Each person brought a small sleeping bag on the plane and we bought towels, pillows, chairs and some other odds and ends. At the end of the trip we donated everything we couldn't fly back with to the Salvation Army.

That was our test trip - we ordered our new Class C later than summer.
  • Sure Did !! Our 1st Long trip; over 3 months. Shipped HOME over 70# of " What in the .... were we thinking". Lots more room after that.

    JM2¢ ~~ YMMV
  • Not odd at all. The closest we've come to that is to ship souvenirs back home on a long trip out west when we had 3 adults in a small trailer.

I have friends who flew west, bought a tent, sleeping bags, etc. then sold them before they came home. Not sure how they arranged a sale but it worked for them.

Shipping isn't cheap. So you'd have to figure how much to ship your stuff back and forth vs. how much it will cost to buy it there and ship it all back.
