I have one in my rig and I've already used the heat function several times. On mine, the 'fireplace' and the heat function are really 2 different things - totally independent of each other. The fireplace uses 3 40-watt light bulbs to simulate the 'fire' effect and does not actually generate any heat, except for the amount coming from the light bulbs. When you want heat, you activate a heat strip which is located at the very top of the fireplace (750 or 1500 watt) with a fan behind it. I haven't stuck my hand behind it but I'd be surprised if much heat at all radiates inward mostly because the fan will push the heat out into the room. It is sealed from behind, except for a vent. I have the owner's manual open and I can't tell if that is an air intake for the heat system or just a vent for the light bulbs.
You can run the 'fireplace' without running the heat if you want to (and vice versa).
I would not be worried.
