Guess I'm not in the majority collecting SS. Still working for a living, raising a family. Since we want the kids to see America we suck it up and drive. From before dawn to well after dark. 800-900 mile day if thats what it takes to get home. Of course I'd prefer less than 400/day but I don't get that much paid time off.
We did 5300 miles this last trip over 16 days. Kids got to experience and learn so much – locks on the Mississippi, dawn over the Missouri River, Minute Man II Missle NHS, Badlands NP, Mt. Rushmoore, Deadwood, Sturgis, Bighorn Mtns, Shell Canyon, Cody, Yellowstone NP, West Yellowstone, Grand Tetons. Not once did I hear a are we there yet. Amazing experience fishing with my kids on the Yellowstone River while watching a eagle soar overhead and a American Bison grazing in the distance.
A couple years ago we decided if we want the kids to see and learn, that we just had to do it. Last year was Acadia, Maine coast. No telling where next year takes us. We'll join the rest of you taking it easy in retirement (hopefully).
