We have been to YNP 9 times from Illinois. We have never needed extra water. A strong head wind can destroy my gas mileage, which I can not plan for, so I usually carry extra can of gas in case I need to get to the next exit,but have never used it. They have Walmarts and gas stations out west. Relax, and have a great trip.
