Don't lie to people. There is nothing past the Mississippi River except Injuns and fur Trappers. Stage coach travel is the way to go. Some of the saloons have hot baths for a nickel, in the unlikely event that your yearly bath would intersect with your travel dates. The general store will have flour, ropes and kerosene for your lanterns. As for water, look to see if there are animal tracks coming and going to the water's edge, that is the easiest way to be sure you haven't found bad water.
