Filling water tanks - 2006 Jayco Greyhawk 31SS

New to this forum, and to RVing!

Getting ready for our first trip, and we're scratching our heads trying to fill the water tanks. Owners manual has a vague diagram showing on and off positions for valves, but we can't seem to find valves 7, 8, and 9. Other Greyhawk 31SS owners have mentioned valves under the kitchen sink, but our 2006 does not have those. We did find 1 and 2 (outside) and 4, 5, and 6 (under bathroom sink).

Anyone have any hints for these beginners?

Thank you!

  • Personally, I would not recommend filling the fresh water tank on a class C as it is usually behind the rear axles and this will cause the front axle to go light and can lead to handling problems. Additionally, it may over lad the chassis. When we had the class C, we never carried more than 1/4 tank of fresh water while on the road. We would fill the tank near our destination it they dod not have water hook ups.

Bobbo - and what do you do with that 'yuck"??

My RV, since the day I bought it, leaked black water past the valve and filled the tubing to the cap. Not a real problem, holds maybe a pint. Finally, I got tired of it, and replaced the valve. New valve did the exact same thing from day 1. I just live with it. I know that when I remove the cap, I will get about a pint of yuck.
  • LOL, love that head-scratching emoticon! Well, maybe "leak" is not an accurate word... gray water slowly drips out of the drain valve when the cap is on. Both valves (gray and black) were completely in, so we couldn't understand why we had the drip. Might need to work on the gray valve... We were definitely scared to unscrew the cap when dumping, but fortunately it didn't explode on us! We did notice that the plastic cap was missing a small piece on the edge, so that's at least part of the problem. Wish us luck that it's not a bigger problem!

Thanks everyone! Just got back from doing our "test dump" and things went pretty smoothly! Looks like we do have a small leak at the dump outlet - could be a broken cap, so we'll grab a replacement and hope that does the trick!

Can't wait for our inaugural trip in 2 weeks!

Thanks again for the quick responses!

    Small leak at dump outlet...........:H
Cap on end of drain line is NOT for stopping leaks, Waste tank drains valves are for completely closing off any thing from waste tanks.
IF drain valves leak thru you will be in for a big surprise when you removed end cap....full drainline gushing out.

  • The Jayco's are bit different.. wish ours just had a fill up like my grandparents Itsaca. On ours it's 3,4 and 5 to fill the tank, which is under the bathrooom sink. Think 6-8 is the hot water heater and 8+ is drains for winterizing.
  • Two of those valves are probably for actually filling the (one) potable water tank , one valve for filling the tank and the other when you are hooked to campground water source and the other valves are for draining the water tank the hot water tank and the lines, the water tank has a dump line that spills water on the ground when the tank is full.

The grey and the black tank have handles on the black PVC pipes located under the RV, these tanks are filled as you use the potable water, when dumping first open the black tank valve, big pipe and after all the "water" has emptied then open the gray water tank valve, small pipe, that way you "clean" the sewer hose from toilet sludge.

Word of caution do not put anything in the toilet that you did not eat other than toilet paper, and do not waste money in marine and RV toilet paper, use Costco instead they really dissolve fast.

  • Valves 1 & 2 are low point drains...they need to be CLOSED

Valves 4, 5 & 6 are for filling fresh water tank/using water from fresh water tank.

    Valves 7, 8 & 9 are for water heater. 7/cold inlet 8/hot outlet 9/bypass
Water heater in service..7/8 OPEN 9 CLOSED
Locate where water heater is inside rv. Valves will be on backside of water heater (opposite of outside access down)

Follow valving chart to use 'city water' ; fill tank or use pump w/tank

    ON EDIT:
    CONGRATS!
Found it while I was posting/typing (slow 2 finger hunt/peck)
  • Guess what? We FINALLY found it! After over an hour of searching, we found the elusive valves 7, 8, and 9, in the bottom "drawer" (that isn't really a drawer, by the way!) under the TV shelf. Phew!! We can fill 'er up with water!
