First Aid Kits

Oh, one thing they taught me in class:

When tearing up someone's shirt to make bandages, slings, etc, Tear up the VICTIM's shirt.

If he lives he will be thankful and forgive you
If he dies he won't care
If you tear up your own shirt he will forget to pay you for it.

I carry a pretty complete REI first aid kit in the RV and then have smaller ones that go cycling/hiking. I've used the one in the RV for a friend that had a nasty bike crash and opened up his face. We got him all cleaned up and sent him off to hospital to be stitched up. I tend to make additions to my kits to suit personal needs/desires. I added survival stuff to one of them in case I get caught overnight in the back country.

Also you should take a basic first aid course at the least and never allow your ambitions to override your abilities.
I have seen a overambitious First Responder endanger a victums life once and as a EMT at that time I had to stop them from further injuring the victum.

Thanks for the support.. And another thing.. This actually killed someone.. We had an accident, Now about half a mile away was a Gas Station with the standard convience store,, Try as I might I could not talk the people into leaving the sceen, going to the station, getting some food for a hypoglycemic diabetic at the sceen and returning.

The law does NOT require you wait at the scene, you may leave and return if needed (Just leave contact info at scene) or report to a police station depending on several things (like can you drive the car) and also GET THE BLAZES OUT OF DODGE (get off the traveled portion of the road, move to shoulder or accident investigation site) if at all possible. The diabetic died before EMS could get there.

I carry honey with me, and other things, just in case I go Hypo.

The law requires you DO report the accident if the combined damages are over XXX dollars. XXX varies from place to place. But if you can get out of traffic DO SO.

I made my own in a Tupperware with things that I would use...most kits have useless stuff that you pay for. I restock it as needed from
our house.

I highly recommend butterfly bandaids not to replace stitches but for a stubborn cut that doesn't need stitches...after you clean the wound well...

most first aid kits don't have calendula or arnica...

It would be a lot cheaper to make your own with things you normally use.

A couple of EMT's have already offered some good suggestions. My ex was an EMT and she got a lot of her supplies from Dixie EMS Supply. They have some pretty good first aid kits for various purposes. I purchased one that I keep in my RV.

I bought one made by Coleman. Has a clamshell case, kind of firm but canvas covered. Has the basics and then I added to it. Some medical tape, New Skin liquid bandage, bigger bandages, etc.

As a retired Firefighter / EMT of 30+ years I can honestly state that there is nothing in a first aid kit that in a real emergency will trump training. The various first responder courses will give you the basics, and will not take a lot of time to complete.

Put together your own kit - buy a box that will store easily and will hold what you need to put in it. To fill it start by looking at what you use at home and duplicate that first for your first aid kit. Then think of things that could happen while away that would not likely happen at home and decide what you need to for that. Most outdoor stores sell packs that will stop/control bleeding from significant wounds and if it is possible that you might be in a situation like that these packs are worth including - though not cheap. Then also add basic over the counter medications for common problems (and mark the expiration date for each).
