These is no "optimization" of the antenna,,that is a complete myth. And in fact a working Batwing outperforms the Jack on both UHF and especially VHF
OK, last time I'm saying this, then I will just be reading. The batwing has become useless, doesn't work properly with digital TV and is now obsolete! And yes the antenna needs to be optimized, either one, which means it has to be positioned correctly to get the best reception, which the Batwing doesn't do anymore. By my own real world test the Jack is far superior!
And yes, I checked the connections on my old antenna a couple times previous to replacing it.
If you're happy with the lesser performance of the Jack, then that's fine. There's certainly the possibility that
your batwing antenna was faulty, but Jeff is absolutely correct as far as batwings in general go. Antennas don't know digital from analog, and don't care. Radio frequency signals are radio frequency signals regardless of the underlying data carried on them. The basic amplified batwing can be improved for picking up the UHF frequencies where most TV transmissions moved with the advent of DTV by the simple addition of the low cost Wingman add-on for a stronger signal, but as has often been said here, there are no "digital" signal TV antennas, other than in the minds of the antenna makers marketing department.
