In Michigan, an officer giving you a print out with the other drivers information on it is a violation of LEIN (law enforcement information network) security protocols. Any information processed by the in car computer, a LEIN terminal, is subject to very strict privacy laws. He could lose his job and the agency could lose its LEIN access for a violation like that. At best, he should facilitate exchanging of information between drivers asking each of them to give your contact info to the other parties. Most States have similar laws, based on federal guidelines.
Not sure the difference between facilitating an exchange and providing information from your LEIN terminal. All the information that the other driver gets is public information that is required by state laws to be exchanged during a collision.
In Maryland, the State Police developed a system called Etix for issuing citations, warnings and repair orders as well as for writing collision reports. A "byproduct" of that system is the ability to print out a sheet of information for each involved driver.
Gordon three is correct in Michigan he would get that information from the lien system (which is hooked into the police cars in Michigan )---and you cannot give that information to other people .
and as a matter fact ,multiple police officers have been caught tracking cars By running lein information on them ---and if they do not have a valid reason for running that ---there can be trouble -----Officers have been disciplined and released for playing with the system.(I was in Public Safety nearly 30 yrs):W
So....the facts of the original poster........include conclusions....which are Not Correct.
