Food Storage

We're new to the TT world, having spent the last 16 years enjoying popup camping.

With all our new possibilities come some new questions. Here's one: now that we CAN keep things stored in the camper, SHOULD we? In particular - food items. On one hand it seems like it might be nice to have a pretty complete "pantry" full of the non-perishable foods we will need. The idea of having it all in there ready to go is pretty appealing to me. But the DW is starting to worry that doing that would attract rodents. I guess I can see her point if you're going to have a lot of opened packages of nice-smelling cereals, chips, and so on. But why not unopened stuff? What about something like peanut butter? My thinking is that the packaging would prevent infestations, but she's pretty concerned.

I'm interested to know what you more-experienced folks do about this? Keep it well-stocked? Keep it stocked only with things like canned and bottled foods/drinks? Keep nothing in it until you're packing up for a trip?

Thanks in advance.

  • I have 4 or 5 snap lid totes that we bring into the house and raid the cabinets before a trip. All fresh dated can goods, perishables, previously opened stuff. If we leave it in the house during a week or two trip, it dates out.might as well use it. It stays in the totes in the trailer. Easy to access and take outside when outdoor cooking. Zero issues with bugs and other creatures. When we get home the food is transferred back into the house. Zero waste!
  • My only suggestion if you are worried about rodents would be to put items that are in chewable containers (i.e. spaghetti boxes) into something tougher. We actually use a small, plastic box that we can seal for the cardboard box stuff. As a bonus, it makes things easier to pack in the house and carry to the trailer.
  • We load the trailer up with non-perishables in the spring and just bring perishables when we use the trailer. Peanut butter no problem, all canned goods, spaghetti etc.(in tightly closed containers). Have never had a problem.
