I've owned 3 RVs in the 29 years I've been RVing; all 3 were bought used (at least 10 years old). I've never sanitized any of them, and yes, I drink the water from the FW tank.:E I usually fill from home (municipal water), but also occasionally top off at campgrounds (potable source only, of course). Water from my tank does not smell or taste bad, although my wife prefers bottled water for drinking since there IS a tiny bit of "plastic" taste if the RV has been sitting awhile. We use the rig one weekend per month at most, and never drain/refill between trips; just top it off.
I did drain this current RV's tank once, but not to clean it out; I drained 5 gallons (measured) at a time in order to "mark" the side of the tank so that I could tell EXACTLY how much water I had at any given time.
The US has pretty much the best quality tap water in the world, yet we also purchase a staggering amount of bottled water (more than any other country in the world), as well as add-on filters, purifiers, softeners, etc. Mind boggling.
