Everyone takes their own risks based on their own experiences in life everyday...

If you really think about it, why would anyone in their right mind even drive a car on the hwy?? Isn't it still around 50,000 people die every year in car crashes each year??

Do whatever you feel comfortable with doing.. Either way, you'll be fine I'm sure... ;)

Been leaving ours on auto (gas on) while underway.
We have a new trailer with a Dometic 8 cu. ft.
All three of our trailers have had Dometics.

Maybe we'll be unlucky some day.
No explosions or fires yet.

So it wasn't running the fridge on gas while traveling that was the issue as hinted in 1st post.......

Dang, prolandsurveyor!! You must have missed MerleFest 2013. Not enough time to recoup insurance for a new camper.:( I bet Bandits Roost, Warrior Creek, and Ft. Hamby were packed.

It was a dometic....I think a rat build a nest in the flu...all camper fridges run more efficient on gas...it is the heat that causes the ammonia to flow and absorb heat.

I have a 3 way fridge, ie., a/c, LP, and d/c. The system's "auto" setting is designed to select the most efficient power source available. I don't use the d/c mode during travel, as the truck's alternator isn't large enough to keep up with the drain on the camper's batteries. I learned this early on while boondocking and had to use the generator to bring the batts up.

Should I run out of propane while traveling, the "auto" mode on the fridge would kick into the d/c mode and give me some more time to find a refill station or have one heck of a B*B*Q upon arrival at a dispersed camping spot. Plus, since my onboard generator is LP, it's pretty critical that I don't run out.:B

Sounds like Norcold strikes again. That will happen on gas or electric.

We set our fridge to Auto mode so it's running off propane (our unit cools better in this mode) anytime we're not plugged into shore power. Our only precaution Is to turn off fridge while refueling. To run directly off battery power while driving your fridge would need a 12VDC mode. Many have reported that contents will stay cold for some time with fridge off. I've never tried it but if your trip is just a couple off hours away, you would probably be OK if you have concerns about running in propane mode while traveling down the road. Have a great trip!!!

I ran my fridge on gas while traveling for 1000s of miles and never had any trouble....until Easter Sunday...my fridge caught fire while towing it and it burnt my camper to the ground.
