Years ago they used to make a pack of flip signs. You would flip to the approriate sign like "antenna up" or "door open" "low tire" and you would hold it up to your window so the people in the other vehicle could see it. There was also a blank sign you could write on if none of the "standard" signs fit the condition.
We once had someone hold a sign up to us on the freeway around Chicago that said "antenna up." We felt like such newbies! Hah. We thanked them and we were able to get it down right away!
Another time a vehicle passed us and the woman in the passenger seat was pointing to the back of our rig and rotating/flipping her outstretched palm. We had no idea what that meant. We had a large berm, so we pulled over. Turns out the tailgate on our toad truck was laying down. Hah. Actually her hand signal was pretty accurate once we realized what it was.
