I used a magic marker to write "STEPS OUT" on a piece of paper once to let someone know their fifth wheel steps were out. I honked and when he looked over I raised it up so he could read it. He waved to me and pulled over onto the shoulder. I bought a small dry erase board since then and keep it behind the center console with markers for it in the door pocket.
