I have a 6hp Tohatsu 4 stroke on mine. That is about the maximum for any bote less than 14'. It will get up on plane with the two of us, and we ain't pixies. The 8' and 10' bote, as well as the 12' bote, have a motor weight limit of 56 pounds, and my Tohatsu is about 55 pounds.
You can't have too powerful a trolling motor, but the shaft length is important.
that was the problem I had when I wanted to buy one. the smallest electric start outboard I could find at the time was a Yamaha 8 hp and the plate on them was always lower than that. I contacted the company and they said that they could put another plate on one listing more horsepower but less carrying capacity or something but never did finalize that deal. I ended up with an inflatable rated for 15-25 hp or so.
