Best thing to do is keep it hidden and don't tell anyone about it. You can't get in trouble for it if no one's searching for it.
Bingo.
So if all you are going to do is keep it hidden and not use it for anything why bother to bring it in the first place?
they must have probable cause to search. don't give them one.
Assuming the main reason for bringing said firearm is for protection, it's not going to do a whole lot of good if you aren't going to use it to avoid "detection". It's not usually the gun owner who gives probable cause but if you DO use it you could potentially be in a huge amount of trouble.
Bottom line is pretty straightforward. If you want to keep a firearm in your rig for protection and cross state lines you must be willing to accept any and all consequences of doing so. This includes taking the life of another human being if necessary. If you don't think you can do so, leave the firearm at home. If you aren't willing to accept the legal consequences of illegal possession leave it at home. Get a lawyer and keep him/her on retainer just in case.
Those of you who are rolling your eyes and calling me paranoid-feel free. I have almost 35 years of experience dealing with the politics and repercussions of illegal firearm possession (and in some cases legal possession) in one of the most anti-gun states on the country. It's not pretty and yes, it can happen to you.
