I borrowed a handgun one time from a cop friend for a camping/touring trip, no permit
Seriously? Do you know how much trouble the cop would have been in if something happened? Who is he? He does NOT deserve to carry a badge if he flagrantly disregards the law.
Prevention and Situational Awareness and Mindset are important factors. In my office have a plaque I obtained when I was still a teenager. It says "A SUPERIOR SAILOR is one who uses his SUPERIOR JUDGMENT to avoid situations requiring the use of his SUPERIOR SKILLS". I look at my firearm as that superior skill. It's better not to be there if at all possible. The permit and firearm are there for when you have done all you can to avoid trouble and it still seeks you out.
Bingo. Sadly I suspect that not everyone reading this has that attitude. The "better 6 as my jurors than 6 as my pall bearers" attitude is a bit unsettling. While I am 100% behind the 2nd Amendment and the right to self-protection, other than possibly boondocking, I wonder where some of these people camp if they feel so compelled to carry a firearm.
