As far as the power capacity issue...
The 120 volt power system in my truck works like this...
I have 4 batteries connected to the inverter at 40AH each, for a total of 160 AH. They're not new, so reality may be more like 100 AH. Supplying 10A to the AC would draw 100 amps from the batteries, so I'd have about 1 Hr of run time. That should be enough to cool off, and it's certainly better than no AC. There is a 5'th battery in the truck that is the starting battery. This is connected to the other 4 through a battery disconnect, so if I run the others down I can still start the truck. Closing the disconnect allows the alternator to charge the batteries while I drive, and/or supply power to the inverter. Alternator capacity is 100 amps, but after supplying the vehicles electrical needs, I've got 60 or so that I can use for charging/inverter.
