that 8.8 amps (a bit over 1100 watts) is RUNNING Starting power is easily 2x or more that for the compressor (like 4-5X) so your inverter is simply NOT big enough.
Another thing to consider. that A/C running sucks over 1,000 watts in an hour. a pair of GC-2 Batteries holds about 1,000 usable watts at the 20 hour rate. at the rate you are sucking power with the A/C that is just a few minutes.
