If I was starting from scratch, then I agree. Generator would be the way to go. I'm not though. I built the inverter / battery set-up in my truck a couple years ago to power other things.
I'm trying not to spend any more money than I have to. If money has to be spent, then so be it, but I don't want to spend unnecessarily. I think I'll try to address the wire gauge issue by adding 1 battery at a spot very near the inverter. The rest of the wiring should handle the steady-state draw, 1 battery 20 cm from the inverter tied in with 0 or 00 gauge should better handle the spike. If that solves the problem, great. If not, I'll probably cough up the dough for a generator.
