Nice try at thinking "outside the box". Unfortunately that may lead to fairly short battery life for all the jars. If you could get your hands on a super capacitor, it might (or might not) work.
How do you plan to recharge?
My choice for a genny would be the Champion 3400 watt inverter/generator with built in remote electric start. It even does a disconnect before it spins down to prevent nasty wave forms.

I think I'll try to address the wire gauge issue by adding 1 battery at a spot very near the inverter. The rest of the wiring should handle the steady-state draw, 1 battery 20 cm from the inverter tied in with 0 or 00 gauge should better handle the spike. If that solves the problem, great. If not, I'll probably cough up the dough for a generator.
