OP: WalMarts are usually fine for one night but don't abuse it. You mentioned KOAs. They are one of the most expensive campgrounds out there. There are many more ways for reasonable camping.
I would suggest you finish schooling and get some leads on jobs before you just take off. You will definitely need to establish a domicile (driver's license, registration, mail forwarding service) and FL, TX and SD are the more popular ones for doing so. You'll need an address for future employers when applying. Good luck!
