I don't go there during the summer - that is probably when they are talking about. We had no biting flies in April, May, September, or October when were there. Honestly,our favorite time is January through March on the bay side. You can get a site right on the water and the campground is empty. Second favorite time is October. Great temps and much less crowded. April, May, and September are great weather wise, but the crowds get big and loud.
Of course, we greatly prefer to camp where others aren't, which is why we dry camp off season. I think going to Assateague during the summer would drive me up a wall.
