Hi, new to forum. Want to travel the US this summer.

Hi,

I just found this forum and wanted to ask a few questions. I have 3 months off this summer to travel. It will be for just me and my dog.

I have a 2008 Nissan Altima. I see the tow weight is 1,000 lbs. Are there any pop up trailers I can use that would be under the weight? Not sure if I should buy one or just stay in hotels while I travel. Ideally I'd like to spend about $2,000 for a pop up if possible.

I've budgeted $10K for this trip. (10 weeks) Not sure if that's enough money. Again, it's just for me and a dog; no family or kids.

Another question. Is it hard to find places to stay in the summer? I'll do most of the travelling out west/Canada/Alaska if possible.

I'll have a lot more questions over the next few weeks but I appreciate any input! Thanks guys. Nice forum here.

The teardrop trailer might be great for you.... Some of these can be pretty neat...

I know you can pull a small trailer loaded up with tent camping gear. Done that many times with my trusty ole Jeep...

Search google for SMALL Rv Trailers

My OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer weighs in at 4200lbs haha...

  • I would suggest something like a teardrop trailer. Even a popup might be a challenge. U-Haul site says you can tow a 6X12 trailer but I'm thinking...ummm, No.

Towing anything with front wheel drive is always a challenge. The less experience you have with towing the more I'd advise against it.

    IMHO of course.

Welcome to the forums and go for it. I think traveling broadens your horizons. I've seen pop ups pulled by motorcycles so it's doable. A quick search of Ebay found this. 800 lbs empty and will not take much stuff to go over 1000 so keep some of it in the car.

We do three months out West without reservations in a BIG rig by not showing up Friday hoping to find a site big enough in a NP or SP (National or State Park). With that small a rig...No Problems mon.
I would put an extra tranny oil cooler on your car.
