Since the majority of the posters on this thread are from back east or the Midwest, don't come to California. The State parks are about $25-$35 a night and that is just a place to park...no utilities. A county park is probably the most reasonable with hookups for about $40 a night. Private parks in areas people want to visit are about $75-$100 a night.
If you want to Camp on Mission Bay in San Diego, you'll be in the worse part of the park if you're not willing to pay over $60 a night. Premium spots are over $100. It's like a pay raise once we get out of California to go camping in areas like Oregon, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. About the only inexpensive place in California are the National Parks, as long as the campground hasn't been privatized.
