How much water to ad to black tank when starting out.?

We don't add hardly a gallon. A small amount of treatment and do the power clean with the backwash about every 3rd or 4th dump. I run the backwash for about a 1/2 hour and also close and open the valve a few times.
Been doing this long before we even had the backwash. Never a problem and have been doing this for 20 years. Also we use our TT about 5 to 6 1/2 months a year....every year.
