Keep in mind that when you rent an RV you aren't renting a 20 year old $9,000 RV. You're renting a new, maintained recent model that is probably 2x-3x the value of the purchase you are considering.
You aren't going to have the same experience on your trip with these two options. They are apples and oranges.
Think of the rental price like a cruise ship vacation. You can easily spend $5K on a cruise for a family and you don't feel like you lost money at the end of the cruise because you don't own the boat. Right?
