I81

Looking for best route from Greenville to Boston. Is I 81 the best bet?
  • Yes, it's probably the best choice.

I would take I-81 to Scranton PA and then take I-84 east to avoid NYC. Unless you are planning on visiting the city?

That's the way we travel to Bangor ME.

This, except I would avoid the stretch of I-81 from Harrisburg to Scranton due to construction and road conditions. The last time I did this stretch it was pretty rough. Maybe a PA member can update this info.

An alternative is to take I-78 out of Harrisburg to PA33 or PA611 to I-80 to US209 up the Delaware Water Gap and hook up to I-84 at the PA/NY border. This is a scenic route and has the added advantage of missing the bridge construction zones on I-84 in PA.
  • Agree with 81 to 84 in New York. We prefer 84 to 87 (thru-way) to I90. I90 to Mass.

There is about a 10 mile stretch about 10-15 miles north of Pottsville that is one lane on both sides with stopped traffic during midday due to paving construction.

At least there was last week. Coming south before 10am was one lane but flowed nicely. Returning north around lunch time was stop and go, added about 15 mins- mostly due to rubberneckers who have never seen paving equipment :R

We were on about 40+ mile stretch of I-81. Beautiful scenery, great driving and traffic flow, except for that construction.

We got off I-81 about 50 miles south of Scranton, can't tell you anything about that stretch, sorry.

It's Pennsylvania. ALWAYS expect road construction/repair. You are seldom disappointed.

Check 511PA for traffic and construction information.
  • On our annual trip up we take I-26 to I-81 to I-84 to the Mass Pike.
Penn has to be the worst state in the country for road construction.
In thirty years of twice a year going up, I cannot remember one year when we were not held up.
There are a few states that I hate, and would never want to live there, but that one leads the list
