I81 to 95
When heading south I use route 17 in Va to get from I81 to 95. 17 is becoming so congested that I'm looking for an alternative route. I don.t mind going a few extra miles but don't want add a lot of miles to the trip.

- in todays washington compost, Dr. Gridlock was questioned about I-95 south of DC.
evidently there is a 29 mile construction zone on I-95/395 and he recommended either 301 if East of town, and 29/17 (or 28/234)if on the west side.
bumpy - I should mention that there is a nice Wal-Mart on the right as you are coming into Fredericksburg with an easy in and out. at that corner there will be a Mary Washington? college which is shortly after the speed drops to 45.
with any luck they will synchronize the lights so one can sail right through. yeah, right.

bumpy- Thanks for the replies. I am going to Myrtle Beach and then to Fla. I just remember how nice 17 used to be. Few traffic lights and no traffic until nearing Fredricksburg. Just thought there might be another road that is like 17 was.
- I should re-remind folks here about the change in traffic pattern in Opal. as you come down 17 towards Opal, stay in the right thru lane and straight thru the light, then there is an exit to the right that takes you over going East. there was a lit sign at first saying to ignore GPS directions.
bumpy - We always use 81 to 66 to 17 to 95, as the majority on here, as Bumpy said, the only real major congestion is near Fredericksburg, trying to get onto 95 south. If that congestion bothers you, you can run farther down 81 to 64 east, to 288 which bypasses Richmond & puts you back on 95 near Chester south of Richmond.
- I like the I 81 to I 77 to I 26 to I 95 south route, Just plan your timing around Charlotte to off traffic times. I 95 is not the smoothest road, lots of thumpty thump thump
- We do I 81 south to I66 east to 17 and then I95 south and we really enjoy the scenery along the route 17.
